McPeeps form Broomball team

After watching all the fun happening on the ice over at the RiverScape MetroPark Ice Rink last year, a group of McPherson Town residents decided to jump in and start their own broomball team, the Lucky McPeeps. Their 30-minute games are played Monday nights between 6 and 8 p.m. until Feb. 22. Come out and cheer them on!

Pollo Tomatillo Yo. Yo. wins 2011 chili cookoff gold

When the circuit breakers tripped as the 16th crockpot was plugged in we absolutely knew we had a night for the books! An additional extension cord off another circuit allowed for a few more last arrivals to be plugged in. Altogether we finished the evening with a record-breaking 20 entries in the 5th Annual McPherson Town Chili Cook-off.

We had some unbelievably delicious entries this year. There was something for every herbivore, omnivore and diehard carnivore. (Hey, we have a very inclusive neighborhood.) A mini-theme developed this year with a few recipes featuring pineapple.

Taking home the coveted gold ladle was “Pollo Tomatillo Yo. Yo.” chili. Silver went to “Jalisco Pork Chili Verde.” And a tie resulted in two bronze ladles being awarded—a cook-off first. “Occupy Dayton OWS” and “Aloha Maui Chicken Chili” were separated by nary a bean in the voting. Congratulations all!

But again, the real winner was our neighborhood. We may have been able to fit a few more people in, but we’d have been hard pressed to squeeze much more fun out of an evening with our neighbors.

Annual picnic is picture perfect

Over 75 neighbors attended the annual Neighborhood Picnic held on Saturday, August 27. Plenty of fun, food and refreshments were enjoyed by all! Held in the neighborhood park, the event featured carry in dishes of many kinds, burgers and other grilled items, games, and good neighborliness. Thanks to all who assisted in organizing, set-up, cooking and clean-up for the event.

Tour de Dayton: Seeing Dayton by Bike

On August 28th, a group of McPherson Townies rolled along Dayton’s bike-friendly neighborhood streets for the first ever Tour de Dayton, experiencing cultural and historical destinations that promote our growing healthy quality of life! The 10 mile ride included visits to the Dayton Dragons’ stadium, the Art Institute, the Wright-Dunbar Historic District, Carillon Park and much more. Looking forward to next year’s ride!

McP Town Progressive Microbrew Tasting Held

Thirsty Dog Old Leghumper, Breckenridge Vanilla Porter, Harpoon Summer Beer, 21st Amendment Hop Crisis and The Brew Kettle Tunguska Imperial Stout were among the more than 25 beers enjoyed during the 1st ever McPherson Town Progressive Microbrew Dinner. A surprise appearance was also made by a homebrew IPA made right in the neighborhood.

The diverse beverage offerings were complimented by BBQ spare ribs with grilled veggies and pineapple, garlic shrimp tapas with tangy zucchini slaw, fresh corn salsa and pulled pork sliders, melon and prosciutto wraps and locally baked beer pretzels and more.

Following the tastings and fantastic eats, many of the Townies did a quick change and carried their kayaks to the banks of the Great Miami River for a short paddle to a best seat in Dayton for the annual 4th of July fireworks. The armada included nearly 30 boats. Not only did the paddlers have an incredible view of the pyrotechnics, but they were also able to catch some of sounds of the CityFolk festival while in route.

Certainly a great day to live in McPherson Town!

Neighborhood-wide garage sale to be held July 9

Residents married in McPherson Town park

A beautiful spring-like day complete with cool breezes embraced McPherson Town residents Dave and Judy for their heartwarming wedding in our neighborhood park. Long time residents of McPherson Town, the couple decided it was only natural to say their vows surrounded by people they love in a place that they love.

Following the ceremony, the newly-weds and their guests enjoyed an evening of celebrating, music and dancing under a tent adjacent to the community garden. Congrats to the lovely couple from all the their McPherson Town family!

1st Annual McPTown International Euchre Tournament

On a rainy Sat. in March, twelve teams competed in two divisions of hardcore McPherson Town euchre-playing. Nearly three hours later, the champion was determined. The winners, now possess the admiration of their neighbors as well as a jar of Frog Bubbles. The rest of us knew we were in trouble when the winning team came through the door in uniform. Everybody had a great time–players and hecklers alike.

McPherson Town could have a front seat to river changes

In cooperation with the Miami Conservancy District, City of Dayton and Montgomery County (and as part of the ‘Rivers, Cycling & Active Lifestyle committee of the Greater Downtown Dayton Plan), Five Rivers MetroParks has just announced its proposal to remove the Monument Avenue low dam and install two grade-control whitewater/bypass “canoe” channels that will make the Great Miami River navigable through downtown and past Carillon Park.

If plans are realized, a river access point and parking may be added to McPherson Town as soon as 2013.

Before the project can proceed, agreements would be reached with the Miami Conservancy District and city of Dayton. Permits will have to be obtained from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Ohio Environmental Protection Agency. Permitting will take at least a year.

McPherson Town Skates RiverScape

On Sun. Jan. 23, neighbors bundled up and hiked across the bridge for an evening on the ice at RiverScape MetroPark. Hot chocolate and warm fires added to the fun. How lucky we are to be in walking distance of such a great facility! Thanks Five Rivers MetroParks!
